Baskets, Spheres, and Sculptural Work
Christian Burchard
September 24 – 28
Participants explore the techniques and aesthetics of
turning green wood. Through demonstration and lecture, Christian covers everything from cutting and preparing green wood to selecting for grain and shrinkage, mounting work on the lathe, proper application of tools, roughing, hollowing, and more. In addition, Christian discusses
visual aspects of design, such as line and form, and encourages students to exercise their creative voices.
Working with 1/2" and 5/8" gouges, parting tools, shear scrapers, and hollowing tools, participants learn to take advantage of green wood’s ornery character to create objects of resonance and beauty. This course is for intermediate-level turners who want to turn up the juice and Christian will discuss marketing and other professional issues with anyone who may be interested.
Christian Burchard is a woodturner and sculptor in Ashland, Oregon. His work is internationally exhibited, from Perth to London to New York, and is in the collections of such major museums as the Museum of Art and Design in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum, and the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. “The most unstable wood,” he says, “is the most fun to work with.”
