Beyond Basic Boxes

Bonnie Klein boxes

Spin Top Box by Bonnie Klein, holly (2.75" dia. x 4.25" high), 2005

Bonnie Klein

October 13 – 17

Instruction centers primarily on designing and turning wood containers with threaded and slip-fit lids. Through demonstration and individual coaching, Bonnie teaches cutting theory, tool usage, tool sharpening, and tool shaping techniques that enable students to achieve the best possible finishes straight from the tool.

Participants learn how to insert decorative brass, stone, and contrasting woods into lids, plus techniques for chatterwork and other surface treatments. A variety of materials may be used to make boxes in addition to wood, including acrylic, tagua nut, bone, horn, and imitation ivory.

Bonnie Klein is a professional turner in Renton, Washington who specializes in boxes with threaded lids. She has been the pioneer in this field for many years and designs, produces, and sells small woodturning lathes and threading jigs. Bonnie has taught and demonstrated at symposia and workshops here and abroad, including New Zealand, England, Ireland, France, South Africa, Australia, and Canada. Her work is in the collection of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution and she is represented by the Del Mano Gallery in Los Angeles.

Open to all turners except complete novices. (Students from Matthew Hill’s course the previous week are welcome.)

Tuition: $615
