Drawing What You See

John Whalley Three Veterans

Three Veterans by John Whalley, graphite on paper (27 3/4" X 16"), 2007

John Whalley

June 7 – 11

This course develops your ability to draw objects accurately and attractively, whether they are right in front of you
or alive in your imagination. Artist John Whalley offers practical training in traditional drawing skills through numerous demonstrations and hands-on exercises. Students develop their understanding of proportion,
composition, and the use of line and values to describe form, space and texture. Work is done in graphite, charcoal, conte crayon, and ink.

If you are at all intimidated by drawing, this workshop
is for you! The ability to explore and communicate visual ideas with pencil and paper is a critical skill for furniture makers, turners, carvers, and visual artists in all other media.

John Whalley is a 1976 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design with a studio in Nobleboro, Maine. He is represented by Greenhut Galleries of Portland, Maine, Vose Galleries of Boston, Massachusetts, and John Surovek Galleries of Palm Beach, Florida. John’s paintings and drawings have been featured in American Art Collector and Maine Home and Design magazines. A 30-year retrospective monograph of his work, In New Light, was published in 2006. Recently, John’s work has been included in the collections of the Portland Museum of Art (Portland, ME), The Colby College Museum of Art (Waterville, ME), and the Kemper Museum of Art (Kansas City, MO).
