Lacewood Sidetables by Peter Shepard, lacewood and ebony, 1999Lacewood Sidetables by Peter Shepard, lacewood and ebony, 1999

Participants hone their joinery and construction skills by designing and building small tables. Any type of table is fair game - four-legged tables with aprons, trestle tables, or pedestal-based tables - and more ambitious features such as drawers and shelves are optional. Starting with a design process that includes mock-ups and full-scale drawings, Peter shares his broad knowledge of solid-wood construction and traditional joinery. Through lectures and demonstration he addresses wood movement; lumber selection; stock preparation; joinery with hand tools and machinery; cutting tapers on a table saw; making round, elliptical, and oval tops; drawer making and fitting; and much more.

Peter Shepard designs and builds custom furniture in Harvard, Massachusetts. He sells his work primarily through prestigious craft shows such as the Smithsonian Craft Show, the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, and the American Craft Council Craft Show in Baltimore. Peter’s work has been featured in Fine Woodworking (issues 141, 145, 221, and 222) and Woodwork (issue 44) and was represented in The Custom Furniture Source Book (Taunton Press, 2001). You can watch a video of Peter talking about his work, “Peter Shepard Turns the Page,” at finewoodworking.com. To see more of Peter’s work, go to petershepardfurniture.com.
