THE BANDWIDTH CHAIR
by William Hanley, AIA © 2006
The Bandwidth Chair is derived from a material's inherent properties. Plywood's layered construction gives direction and detail to the chair's formal characteristics and assembly. The Baltic Birch plywood chair expands a material's smaller scale properties into a larger scale assembly. By doing so, the chair reveals varied scales of texture. Designed as a stand-alone furniture piece or a series line, the chair embodies connection between materiality and form adaptable to a variety of uses.
The Bandwidth Chair exemplifies a furniture line with scalable configurations, The modular repetition of the wood frame exhibits flexibility in configuration i.e.- a dinning room chair could be scaled from chaise lounge to couch …all offering the consumer a range of possibilities, all editable to custom needs.
On a larger scale, the Bandwidth furniture line is produced with a CAD/CAM process that cuts assemblies of each furniture configuration from a series of digital templates sent directly to the manufacturer. These templates are then hand assembled and shaped to further refine the multiple curved surfaces to the human form.
The final furniture piece embodies machined components and hand finishing in a configurable assembly of form and function.

PROCESS
A4 recognizes that each project necessitates a unique response to context and client. Multiple design solutions are always offered which address multi-faceted program requirements, aesthetic directions and site characteristics. Varied schematics provide different takes on specific client design parameters and allow wider perspective of understanding. Schemes are drawn from the diversity of experience and different backgrounds that each partner brings to the project.
Emphasis is also placed upon communicating a thorough and comprehensive understanding of each project through visualization. Visualizing schematic concepts, contextual peculiarities, interior environments and detailed construction assemblies aid in a project’s development and resolution. For larger, remote or projects abroad, a project’s information during development and construction is available in a secure online environment, which allows for collaborative participation and informative interaction by Owners, Architects, Consultants and Builders wherever they may be…

“Construction of any scale is an exercise in patience and cooperation. The best results are often those with a collaborative effort between designer, builder and owner.”
