“Charles Rennie Mackintosh began experimenting with the high-back chair in the late 1890’s. This design, developed for the Ingram Street Tearooms in 1900 served two functions. First, of course, as a seat; secondly, the tall back separated and defined the customers dining space from the common space or corridor created by the row of tall backed chairs placed at the end of each table in the tearoom. A companion design, a lower back chair with a crest rail that was located just above the set of single squares was used along the sides of the tables. The simplicity and stark geometry of the design was years ahead of its time and it remain an iconoclastic form over 100 years later."
