Since Graduating from the North Bennet Street School in 1979, William Thomas has worked in his one-man Rindge, New Hampshire shop building commissioned furniture pieces. Working primarily in eighteenth century American period styles, his work has found its way into the homes of many clients. Several of Bill’s pieces have garnered awards, and in 1998 his Sheraton Cylinder-fall Secretary was the subject of an article in Arts and Antiques Magazine. A founding member of the New Hampshire Furniture Masters Association, Bill served for three years as their chairman.
“I designed this chair in 1999 to accompany the Sheraton Cylinder-fall Secretary I built the previous year. The design draws upon several period sources including plates from The Cabinet-maker and Upholsterer’s Drawing Book by Thomas Sheraton as well as measurements taken from antique chairs made in Portsmouth, NH by Langley Boardman. The leg inlays echo the legs of the secretary, while the inlays in the chair back are my own conception.”
