Gerald Curry has been building furniture in his own shop since 1975. Entirely self-taught in his craft, he cut his teeth in the business by studying and reproducing some of the exquisite 18th Century American furniture at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He saw this as an apprenticeship of sorts, learning from the great makers of the past about design, construction, and standards of workmanship. After more than 20 years of making historical furniture, he now designs and builds contemporary furniture exclusively.
“ The primitive urge to craft objects seems basic in mankind. The process of making something from simple, natural substances is an integral part of who we are. Today most of us are surrounded by a multiplicity of objects; sadly, few of these show any trace of humanity. My goal as a designer / maker of furniture is to use simple, unprocessed materials and fashion them into interesting contemporary designs using age-old techniques – solid wood assembled with intricate hand-cut joints. My hope is that both the beauty of the materials and the hand of the maker are evident in each piece.”
