“Perhaps the one consistent thread that has run through my work over more than 35 years as a practicing artist is “the shock of the new” or, to be more accurate, the shock of the unexpected and previously unacceptable.
When my father and I made the bowl in this exhibition and showed it at the first Rhinebeck Craft Fair in 1973, it was a radical statement that challenged people's preconceptions and provoked comment and controversy. Now spalted wood is a mainstay of the wood turning world, and imperfections are widely viewed as adding to the beauty of a turned object. Looking back, it's hard to see what all the fuss was about.”
