Tim Rousseau
Tim completed the Center's Twelve-week Intensive Program in 1998 and stayed on stayed on as a workshop assistant, and then became an Artist in Residence. He then moved to a highly regarded cooperative studio in Hoboken, New Jersey where he was able to build furniture on commission and work collaboratively with the studio's other makers. In 2002 he returned to Maine settling in Appleton and became the Center's first Resident Instructor. Over the course of the following years he transitioned back to building furniture full time. He continues to lead two of the Center's Twelve-week Intensive Programs annually. Tim regards himself as much a teacher as a furniture maker.
"In spite of myself this is what I do- make furniture and teach furniture making. I love the whole deal; the designing, the making, the tools, the shops, the community around it and -of course- the medium, the wood. It all suits me.
I hope that some qualities of my work can reinterpret the history of furniture making as I have come to understand it. But the reality is I just show up. That's the important part. I just show up and see what comes out. For me, that's the best part.
My hope, or one of my hopes, is that when the work is done that it is clear and honest and maybe, if I'm lucky, even beautiful."
