Maryah Smith-Overman
Maryah holds a Bachelor of Fine Art with a concentration in Design from the University of North Carolina. A resident of Ashville, she is a furniture maker working on commission, creating custom pieces for the home. Maryah was a Studio Fellow here at the Center in the fall of 2005.
"My time as a fellow at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship gave me the opportunity to explore new skills, techniques and ideas. I get energized each time I discover something new about wood, how it works, and can be manipulated to be visually strong. In my own work, I often think about color and texture when I begin the design process and how I can integrate either or both into the design. Much of my work involves curves and organic shapes. I enjoy the challenge of transforming wood into fluid forms and exploring its many possibilities.
