JOHN GODFREY
John has spent most of his life in Northwest New Jersey. During high school his woodshop teacher sparked his first interest in working with wood which has grown from a hobby to a passion. While attending Rutgers University, he decided to pursue a career in furniture making. John enrolled and completed the Twelve-week Intensive Program here at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. Returning to New Jersey, he built a workshop and began building speculative pieces, as well as taking commissions. After the completion of a summer assistantship, John applied to the Center’s Fellowship Program and is a current Studio Fellow.
“The table I made for this show was a chance to try new methods and techniques that I had not previously used in other pieces. The contrasting colors, negative space and form of the table give it a deceptive quality, which creates the illusion that the piece is much larger than it actually is. In order to properly interpret the table one must observe it from all viewpoints.”
