CHLORIS LOWE

From New Lisbon, Wisconsin, Chloris holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin.  In 2005 he enrolled in the Center’s Twelve-Week Intensive Program and also worked as workshop assistant.  After completion of his Studio fellowship, Chloris went on to Rhode Island School of Design to continue his studies.

“Within the past year I have gradually come to realize that I take my work and myself a little too seriously. While I have not fully abandoned a ridged approach to designing and making, there are objects that I have begun to create that came to fruition through a freer and more playful process. One of these objects is the Beast Bench.  In creating this piece I began with a large blocky bench form, which I proceeded to shape into the flowing muscular object you now see. Beginning with only a general idea for the finished product, the process of shaping became an immediate and cyclical information exchange between the object, the tools and my senses.

While many pieces that I create are still meticulously planned prior to ever milling the wood, the Beast Bench is a departure into a more organic creation process.”
