Akiko Yokoyama
Born and raised in Japan, Akiko first came to the United States to attend Williams College in Massachusetts. After graduation she joined the corporate world and spent a decade pursuing a business career. When she made the decision to leave her rather successful career and explore the possibility of becoming a woodworker, her peers reacted saying “Oh well, Akiko is going through her version of mid-life crisis and she will eventually snap out of it”. After taking the Center’s Twelve-week Intensive and Nine-month Comprehensive programs and then spending a year as a Studio Fellow, Akiko is in the fourth year of her “crisis” and hopes never to “snap out of it.”
“My education here at the Center has given me a comprehensive knowledge as well as the confidence to be a maker. The Fellowship Program has given me opportunity to explore my identity as a designer and start building my own design vocabulary. Now that my fellowship term is ending, I’m looking forward to embarking on what I hope will be a life-long journey to define and refine my own style as a designer.”
