Bad Hare Day by Silas Kopf, Macassar ebony, walnut, maple, and marquetry (58"x28"x41"), 2007

Silas Kopf

July 5 – 9

This course is open to woodworkers at all skill levels who would like to explore the decorative use of veneer. Silas teaches basic veneering techniques, marquetry, parquetry, inlay, and their application to furniture.

Participants learn by working on marquetry projects such as floral, still life, landscape, and abstract geometric forms. They use both hand and power tool methods, including double-bevel sawing with fret-saws and a scroll saw.

Silas Kopf is the outstanding practitioner of marquetry in this country. He works out of his studio in Northampton, MA, exhibits nationally, and has received numerous honors, including a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts which he used to study at the Ecole Boulle, in Paris. His book, A Marquetry Odyssey, was published by Hudson Hills Press in 2008. More of Silas’ work may be seen at www.silaskopf.com.
