“New Work by Faculty,” an exhibition of contemporary studio furniture, turning, and carving by 26 professional woodworkers from around the globe, is currently on view at the Messler Gallery of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, in Rockport.
The exhibition presents a spectrum of aesthetics in contemporary woodworking, from an Arts & Crafts-inspired desk by Maine furniture maker Kevin Rodel, to a two-foot long sculpture of a snail by British master carver Chris Pye. The diversity of work reflects the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship’s teaching philosophy, which is to encourage each student to find his or her own creative voice.
“It is a privilege to be able to showcase so many influential furniture makers and wood artists,” says Peter Korn, the Center’s Executive Director.
International exhibitors in “New Work by Faculty” are Peter Fleming from Canada, Peter Lloyd, Chris Pye and Toby Winteringham from England, David Haig from New Zealand and David Upfill-Brown from Australia. Exhibiting woodworkers from the across the United States are Brian Boggs (Kentucky), Jon Brooks (New Hampshire), Nick Cook (Georgia), Julie Godfrey and Beth Ireland (Massachusetts), Garrett Hack and Alan Stirt (Vermont), Matthew Hill (Oklahoma), Todd Hoyer and Hayley Smith (Arizona), John Jordan (Tennessee), Bonnie Kline (Washington), Clifton Monteith (Michigan) and Michael Puryear (New York).
