Exhibition Celebrates Creativity in Wood
Exhibition dates: Friday, March 21, 2008 – Thursday, April 18, 2008
On Friday, March 21st “Celebrating the Studio Fellowship” opens at the Messler Gallery in Rockport, on the campus of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. There will be a public reception from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The exhibition showcases furniture and sculpture by eighteen talented makers who have been awarded fellowships at the school since 1996.
The Center’s Studio Fellowship program gives advanced creative opportunities to promising young woodworkers and accomplished professionals in shared studio space on campus. Describing the program, Executive Director Peter Korn says, “We try to give Studio Fellows a blank check for creative exploration and professional growth. How they fill it in is determined by their talent and drive.”
Reuben Foat, 26, came to the Fellowship last September, fresh from an arts degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “It has been a gift to be around five other Fellows who share my passion for woodworking,” says Reuben. “We support each other to take our inspirations as far as we choose. Plus we have technical guidance from a superb faculty.”
Another exhibitor, Jacque Allen, 59, from Asheville, North Carolina, participated in a three-month Fellowship last fall. Allen says, “I left The Center with an entirely different outlook on my work and heading in a totally different direction than I thought I would.”
Exhibitors in “Celebrating the Studio Fellowship” include current and former Fellows Jacque Allen, Aaron Fedarko, Reuben Foat, Kevin Gill, John Godfrey, Brandon Kimble, Jack Kline, Mary Lake, Chloris Lowe, Liz Phillips, Brian Reid, Tim Rousseau, Libby Schrum, Jesse Shaw, Carter Sio, Ric Washburn, Ben Watkins and Liza Wheeler.
The exhibition will be on display from March 21st through April 18th. Gallery hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday. Located at 25 Mill Street, the Messler Gallery is accessible either from Mill Street or from Route 90 in Rockport, Maine. Pieces from the exhibition can also be viewed on the Center’s website, www.woodschool.org.
The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship is a nonprofit school, offering courses in furniture making and related arts such as carving and woodturning. For more information, please call 207-594-5611 or e-mail cfc@woodschool.org.
