Eight Maine woodworkers have received awards at Maine Wood 2008, a statewide, juried exhibition currently on display in Rockport’s Messler Gallery.
Aaron Fedarko, from Camden, took top honors for his Dos Amigos table, winning the “Peoples Choice Award” at the opening on November 29 by receiving a plurality of the more than 125 votes cast by attendees. The $500 cash prize was sponsored by the Holt & Bugbee lumber company of Tewksbury, Massachusetts.
Lynn Szymanski, from York, won the other top prize. Her sculptural piece “Remnants” was selected “Jurors Best in Show” and received a $500 gift certificate from Lie-Nielsen Toolworks of Warren, Maine.
Other winners came from across the state, with work that ranged from a four-poster bed to the mechanical frog for which Alan Bradstreet, from Pownal, won “Most Creative” and received a $400 gift certificate from Highland Hardwoods of Brentwood, New Hampshire. Chris Joyce, from Stonington, won “Best New Maker” and received a $350 gift certificate from Maine Coast Lumber of York, Maine. Steve Burke, from Hermon, won “Best Joinery Techniques” and received a $300 gift certificate from DMT of Marlborough, Massachusetts. Brian Reid, from Rockland, won “Best Use of Veneer” and received a $250 gift certificate from sponsor Certainly Wood of Aurora, New York. Peter Thompson, from Cornville, won “Outstanding Craftsmanship” and received a $250 gift certificate from Fat Andy’s Hardwoods of North Yarmouth, Maine. Wayne Hall, from Bucksport, won “Best in Furniture” and received a $250 gift certificate from Northland Forest Products of Kingston, New Hampshire.
