Clifton Monteith to Teach at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship
Noted rustic furniture maker Clifton Monteith will offer a course titled “Twig Tables” at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport during the week of June 16 - 20. “Participants will make greenwood willow tables that are delightful in form and function, using the simplest of materials and tools,” according to Monteith.
Clifton Monteith creates rustic furniture and architectural elements in Lake Ann, Michigan. His furniture is in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Arts & Design in New York, and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. Originally a painter, he teaches rustic furniture making across the globe, from Parnham College in England to Kyoto City University College of Art in Japan.
Camden resident Nancy Caudle-Johnson took a course with Monteith at the Center in 2005. “Clifton’s course is ideal for people in the area,” she says. “You can take it without previous experience and create something that is beautiful to your own eye and spirit.”
“Once you have worked with these wonderful natural materials and investigated the possibilities of wood twigs in their most native form,” says Monteith, “you will never be the same! Every patch of saplings will suggest delight!”
The workshop is open to all (age 17 & over), and space is still available. Tuition is $615 for the week, plus a $70 application fee.
