September 22 – October 3

This course encourages intermediate-level woodworkers, including graduates of our Basic Woodworking course, to expand their creative and technical skills. Each student designs and builds a solid-wood box with extensive personal guidance from Peter and Tim. The use of frame-and-panel construction and/or veneer are options, so students have a broad palette of techniques and design possibilities to explore.

The instructors teach techniques for joinery, such as dovetails and miters, and for sculpting and shaping, using both hand-tool and machine-oriented approaches. Through lecture and demonstration they also present how to make wooden hinges and install metal ones, fit lids, design pulls, and much more. Special attention is given to wood selection and the relationship between figure, grain, and form.

Peter Lloyd is one of England’s foremost box makers. Working from a one-man shop in Cumbria, he exhibits throughout the U.K. and Europe. Peter is the author of Making Heirloom Boxes (Guild of Master Craftsmen, 2002) and the co-author of Celebrating Boxes (Linden Publishing, 2002). For more information, visit his web site: www.finehardwoodboxes.co.uk.

Tim Rousseau divides his time between building furniture on commission in Appleton, Maine and teaching at the Center. Following his initial training in our Twelve-week Intensive, from which he graduated in 1998, Tim spent two years working in a multifaceted group shop in Hoboken, New Jersey before returning to Maine to set up his own business. In 2002 and 2003 he served as the Center’s Resident Instructor, running our Workshop Program and teaching alongside of visiting faculty. Since then, he has been a lead instructor for the Twelve-week Intensive. His furniture is shown in galleries and exhibitions throughout the Northeast.
