VENEERING

Darryl Keil table

Veneered and inlaid demilune table by Darryl Keil, East Indian rosewood, lacewood, and maple, 1987

Darryl Keil

June 23 – 27

Veneer is popular for the wide selection of wood species and figures it offers the furniture maker, and for the design freedom it brings by diminishing the constraints of wood movement. In this course, students acquire the skill to transform veneer from its raw state into beautiful, finished panels. Darryl teaches basic book matching, four-way and radial matching, and short-grain borders in straight and circular patterns, as well as edge treatments. He also demonstrates curved panel construction and veneering of curved and shaped parts using a vacuum press. In addition, Darryl presents the tools and techniques involved in creating different types of inlay. Participants learn by building two veneered and inlaid panels, doors, or tabletops.

Darryl Keil is a leading expert on veneer work. He has made two excellent videotapes on the subject, Working With Veneer and Working in a Vacuum, and he writes for Fine Woodworking. Darryl began making furniture in 1976 and was a pioneer in the application of vacuum pressing technology to woodworking. His company, Vacuum Pressing Systems, operates out of Brunswick, Maine.

Open to all woodworkers.
