June 14 – 18
This is an action-packed introduction to making traditional American furniture—such as Windsor and Appalachian-style chairs—straight from the tree. Each student builds a small, graceful, spindle-backed stool with Peter’s guidance. Participants get the full experience of splitting parts from green logs, shaving and steam bending them, hand-carving pine seats, and joining them all together. Peter teaches the tuning and sharpening of all the tools involved in the process, including the drawknife, spokeshave, scorp, and travisher, and demonstrates finishing techniques.
Students can expect to go home with all the skills they’ll need to continue building similar projects on their own.
Peter Galbert is a full-time chair maker and instructor in Jeffersonville, New York. He teaches in his own workshop and at craft schools across the country, and his chairs are exhibited and collected internationally. Peter invented and produces the Galbert Caliper, a direct-reading caliper for spindle turning, and writes for American Woodturner. His work can be seen at www.petergalbertchairmaker.com and his blog is widely read.
