Community Classes

Weekend Community Classes are designed for people who cannot schedule the full-time attendance required for our Workshops and other programs. They provide outstanding instructors and facilities in a more accessible time format. Classes are held Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00-5:00.

Metalworking for Woodworkers
Erica Moody

March 14 & 15

This course prepares participants to make attractive metal objects such as tools, hardware, and accessories in their own workshops with simple, accessible equipment. Erica’s step-by-step instruction covers the working characteristics of brass and steel, and techniques for layout and marking, cutting, drilling, filing, sanding, and silver brazing. To practice these skills, each student makes a brass pocket bevel.

Turning for Beginners
Ken Wise

March 28 & 29

In this two-day class for novices, Ken teaches lathe safety, tool selection, and essential techniques for turning spindle work and greenwood bowls. With Ken's one-on-one guidance, each student completes a series of exercises and projects that impart skill and confidence.

Paddle Making
Ken Wise

April 4 & 5

Create your own customized canoe paddle! Starting from rough blanks, students learn to lay out their desired lengths, grips, and blade shapes. Ken’s instruction includes proper use of hand tools, such as spoke shaves, block planes, card scrapers, and rasps, for carving and shaping. Paddles may be finished with spar varnish as time permits. Also, students can purchase additional blanks to take home.

Community Woodturning Classes are open to anyone who is 16 years of age or older.


Registration and Payment Information:

Please call our office at 207-594-5611 to check availability and to register for a class.

    • Community Class tuition is payable in full at the time of registration.
    • If you withdraw from a Community Class more than seven days in advance, we will refund your tuition less a $40 cancellation fee. 
    • No refund will be given for withdrawal within seven days of a Community Class.
    • We accept personal checks, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.
    • In the event that the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship must cancel a class, we will promptly refund the full tuition amount.
