Around Town: the Rockland breakwater

on .

Why go for a walk along the ocean when you can walk on the ocean? The Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse sits perched at the end of a mile-long granite path, shooting out into Rockland harbor. Built from 1881 to 1899 with 700,000 tons of granite, the Breakwater helps protect the harbor from high, storm-driven seas. Even when a dark, unexpected rain cloud hovers overhead, it's a whorthwile jaunt.
